Day to day

Arrive on unit call; check hero makes with Standby Props; watch rehearsals; reset fast between takes; escalate workshop jobs; wrap kit and notes.

Call times

Matches unit call when rostered to standby (commonly 07:00–08:00 on UK drama). Workshop days revert to model-unit hours. Night shoots flip the day — read the call sheet.

What to wear

Matte blacks on set; production-approved boots; gloves; radio pouch; PPE as briefed for installs. Keep resin/solvent-contaminated clothes out of camera areas. Compact PPE for quick repairs off-camera.

Tools & kit

Standby repair kit (adhesives, fillers, tapes, basic tools); touch-up paints; radio; spares list; gloves; headtorch.

Tips

Confirm title, agreement, budget band, prep/wrap, kit/machine fee and workshop location on the deal memo. We never invent Bectu figures — check bectu.org.uk / Props Branch Prop Modelling and Prop Painters cards. On smaller shows Model Making may sit under Props as Prop Modelling; larger features often list Model Making as its own department.
